Description: “Warriors & Entertainers” an exhibition of Japanese Woodblock Prints from The Alice T. Miner Museum, Chazy, NY, runs from July 12 through October 25, 2008. Nearly all of the prints are ukiyo-e, “pictures of the floating world” that represent urban art from the late 17th to late 19th centuries and feature actors, courtesans, and warriors. These prints, exhibited for the first time, originated mostly from Edo (modern Tokyo), but Osaka, Kyoto and Nagoya are also represented. In the early 20th century, cultured Americans became fascinated with the unique colors and sparse lines of Japanese Woodblock Prints. Chicago became a center for collectors. Alice Miner acquired her prints in the mid 1920s on advice from Emma Hodge, a Chicago collector – the collection of prints was catalogued by Helen Gunsaulus, who, for many years, was Curator of Japanese Prints at The Art Institute of Chicago. David B. Waterhouse, Emeritus Professor in the Department East Asia Studies at the University of Toronto selected the prints, wrote the essay for the Exhibit Catalogue, and will deliver an opening lecture on Saturday, July 12, 2008. Seating for the Lecture is limited; and reservations are required. Further information is available online www.minermuseum.org http://www.minermuseum.org Reservations: [email protected]
