Touring Kayakers Checklist

Wind, air temperature, currents and tides are constantly changing, being prepared for these changing weather conditions will enable you to continue your paddling expedition and return home safely with good memories. Following is a checklist that will help you prepare for a safe and enjoyable kayaking experience.

Basic Gear

  1. Kayak
  2. Paddle
  3. Skirt
  4. Personal Flotation Device (aka Life Jacket)

Proper Clothing: Dress in quick dry, synthetic layers appropriate for the weather. Cotton kills when wet and cold.

Layer 1 – Performance Base layer

  • Thin polypro top – (aka long underwear)
  • Thin polypro bottom

Layer 2 – Insulating Mid layer

  • Fleece Top
  • Fleece Bottom

Layer 3 – Wind Block/Splash Proof Outer layer

  • Drytop, splash top, gore tex jacket
  • Pants, shorts

Extremities

  • Feet: Closed toe sandals, booties, watershoes, socks
  • Head: Hat, visor
  • Hands: Neoprene gloves

Extras

  • Sunglasses
  • Sunblock

Safety Essentials – Put non-water resistant items in a small dry bag.
